There was a time, centuries ago, when Advent was a season of fasting and repentance, although lesser in severity to Lent. Part of the period of preparation and expectancy may still have to do with a look at how we live our lives and what needs to change. Some of the readings from the Lectionary during Advent are not all sweetness and light.
